Cinnamon Rose (Rosa majalis) is a very rare native rose with cinnamon-brown branches, pink flowers, and red rose hips. The shrub grows in sunny to semi-shaded spots in hedges, thickets, forest edges, coastal dunes, and stony slopes. Cinnamon Rose blooms in June and July with pink flowers. After flowering, small, round to oval red rose hips are produced. The species prefers dry, lime-rich, well-draining sandy or loamy soil. Cinnamon Rose fits well in natural rose plantings, lime-rich hedges, dry thickets, and forest edge plantings where a rare rose with strong ornamental value is desired.

Ecological value

Cinnamon Rose is valuable for insects, birds, and natural thickets. The open rose flowers provide pollen and are visited by bees, bumblebees, hoverflies, beetles, and other small flower visitors. The red rose hips serve as food for birds and small mammals later in the year. The thorny branches provide shelter and nesting opportunities for small birds. In mixed hedges and forest edges, Cinnamon Rose provides blooms, hips, structure, and cover. The species is particularly interesting as a rare rose for lime-rich, dry, and natural plantings.
