Broad buckler-fern
Dryopteris dilatata
Choose a size
Broad Buckler Fern (Dryopteris dilatata) is an originally native fern with broad, triangular, and finely divided dark green leaves. The stalks carry brown scales with a characteristic dark center stripe. The leaves grow in a wide, funnel-shaped clump and largely die back during winter. The species naturally grows in moist deciduous and coniferous forests, hedges, shrubs, ditch edges, on shaded banks, and among rotting wood. In summer and early autumn, round sori appear on the underside of the leaves. Broad Buckler Fern is suitable as undergrowth beneath trees and large shrubs.
Specific care needed
Plant in humus-rich soil that remains moist but is not constantly submerged. An annual layer of leaf compost or natural leaf litter helps keep the soil cool and humic. Protect young plants from drying out during prolonged droughts.
